Klaipėda

Klaipeda is the third city in the west. The city was founded on the 1st of August in 1252. It originated from the wooden castle of Livonian Order on the left bank of the River Dane. The German knights called the city Memelburg, but it had a Lithuanian name as well - Klaipeda.
The history of Klaipeda is complex. Different trading interests of Lithuanians, Germans, Dutch, Swedish and English people as well as the variety of cultures have influenced frequent changes in the city's political administration. The history has taken a bad turn during the Nazi and Soviet times, yet the city proved to withstand the rigors once again. Today Klaipeda bravely faces its 750th anniversary - an old, but modern city.
